These are the trends in the trade show industry in 2024.

The trends in the trade show industry have changed, with design, exhibition equipment, and tools being important elements to consider. Here, you'll find our best tips and insights on today’s trends in the trade show industry!

"We believe that a modern stand in 2024 is a large, open stand with eye-catching elements, such as ceiling hangings or an elevated feature that’s visible from a distance. The stand incorporates wood, both in the structure and as design elements. The wood helps create a better atmosphere, and if you can combine design with function, you’ve scored high this year – we think."

– Helene Dalheim Sand, stand designer at Compass Fairs.

What has changed in exhibition stand design in recent years?

A few years ago, smaller stands were more common. These stands weren’t as open as they are today, but were divided into “booths” with three closed walls. Stand design at that time was characterized by advertising walls – where it varied whether or not custom prints were used. There was not as much focus on creating an inviting atmosphere as there is today, and the furniture often consisted of materials like chrome and leather.

Today, we see more open exhibition stands with larger areas, where the design incorporates more natural elements and exhibition equipment in pleasant colors. The material used for the exhibition furniture is more akin to regular furniture, aiming to create a sense of comfort and welcome. This, combined with banner walls – where the client’s profile and message are clearly presented – is more common at trade shows today.

In 2024, we will likely see the use of wood to a much greater extent – both in the construction itself and as design elements. Exhibitors are demanding higher standards from stand builders when it comes to the use of sustainable materials, and there is also a growing desire for more soft textiles and a cozy atmosphere.

– Ultimately, it is the customer’s wishes and needs that are decisive, says Jack Vergeman, Expo designer.

How to design a modern exhibition stand in 2024?

lthough a modern exhibition stand in 2024 will stand out with natural elements such as wood, organic shapes, and neutral, pleasant colors, this won’t apply to everyone. It is the responsibility of the stand builders to implement such elements, with the balancing act being to create a pleasant atmosphere while ensuring it aligns with the exhibitors’ expectations and needs.

– In our industry, it’s not necessarily the case that we can follow trends to the letter. Every client and exhibitor has their own profile and brand – and our main task is to present this in the best possible way. Therefore, it’s not guaranteed that this year’s trends with wood and soft textiles will align with the client’s profile and desired expression, says Sand.

How to capture attention at trade shows in the future?

Some serve pastries, others hand out water bottles or other items. At trade shows today, we see an increasing use of effective tools to capture the attention of visitors. Technology is used for activities and entertainment, we know that contests spark curiosity, and the use of sound and lighting can help you stand out.

The trade show industry, like everything else, has had to adapt to the developments of our time. It takes more to capture people’s attention now compared to how it was before. Therefore, exhibitors and stands also need to do more to maintain the attention of visitors.
